Healthy Families Steuben

Healthy Families Steuben is part of a statewide initiative, the Healthy Families New York Home Visiting Program, through New York State Office of Children and Family Services. It is a program that offers support and education to expectant and new parents in Steuben County. Families are offered long term home visiting services from Healthy Families Steuben from pregnancy until the child is ready for school. Healthy Families Steuben is nationally accredited by Healthy Families America. The program is provided locally by Kinship Family and Youth Services and the Institute for Human Services. Services are voluntary and there is no cost to the participating families.

The main goals of Healthy Families are to:

  • Educate and support new parents in the area of infant care and child development.
  • Provide families with someone to talk to about the joys and challenges of parenting.
  • Connect families with other community resources that may be useful to them.

All parents in Steuben County are eligible. We have offices in Addison, Bath, and Hornell. In addition to home visits, parent support groups are provided several times throughout the year.

During a typical visit:

  • Child development information is provided.
  • Child's health needs are discussed and support is given to access medical care and information.
  • Parents are shown how to play withe their children in ways that will enhance their development.
  • If desired by the family, referrals are made to other appropriate services.

Family Preservation Services (SHAPE)

Established in 1982, our Supportive Home and Parent Enrichment (SHAPE) program provides in home guidance, instruction and support to parents with children at risk of out-of-home placement because of neglect or abuse. Our staff are visiting families in their homes, providing individualized instruction tailored to the parents' learning capabilities. We focus upon: effective parenting, child development needs, safe and constructive discipline techniques, basic life skills, family management and building self-esteem and self-confidence as parents.

Foster Care Services

Our therapeutic foster homes specialize in the care of children with emotional and behavioral health care needs.Presently, we have the capacity to serve forty (40) children among our twenty-nine (29) certified foster family homes. There are many more children needing the special care and support that only a loving and supportive family can give. Thus, we are conducting a number of home studies of prospective foster families for these children. For a family considering becoming a Kinship foster home or an adoptive home, they may contact us at 607-324-0909.

Summer Experience for Special Needs Children

This special summer experience, known as 'Kids Adventure Time" ( K.A.T.) is a collaboration of cross systems agencies in Yates County, New York State; that provides a therapeutic experience for at-risk children between the ages of five (5) to fourteen (14) and their siblings. Children are exposed to experiences in the arts, sciences and sports. They also engage in activities that promote community connectedness; such as field trips and community service projects. This is all accomplished within the context of strengthening social skills and self-esteem.

Chemical Dependency Services

"To improve the health and quality of life for individuals who suffer from chemical dependency"

Kinship House, our eighteen (18) bed community residence located in Bath, NY offers a spacious and peaceful residential setting for individuals eighteen years of age and older, as they continue their recovery from alcoholism and other chemical addictions. It is the first step for many in their return to family and community life.

Following their stay at the community residence we offer supportive living apartments for persons who are ready for community living and who would gain from the additional support of our certified counselor.
